Don’t subsidise fuel, don’t tax cars

I AGREE with Dzof Azmi's argument in Fuelling trouble with petrol subsidies, (Contradictheory, StarMag, March 30) that the Government cannot afford to subsidise petrol and keep prices artificially low forever.

However, I want to point out that when you talk about the price of petrol, you have to also talk about the price of cars in Malaysia. These two items go hand in hand, something that Dzof failed to mention.

If one expects the rakyat to pay the real price of petrol (say, RM3 per litre) in the future when the petrol subsidy is zero, then the price of cars must also be real, ie, be tax free.

If one expects the people to pay the full, real-world price of petrol – and I must say it is a perfectly reasonable expectation – then the rakyat expects, also reasonably, to buy cars at real-world prices, without the exorbitant taxes currently imposed.

For example, a Toyota Corolla at the real price of US$19,000 (RM60,500) instead of artificially high at RM117,000.

Now, when the average consumer buys a car, he has already paid (in the form of import duties, excise duties, and sales tax) to the Government, in advance, a sum greater than the petrol subsidy he can expect to enjoy over the time he owns the car.

Let me give you an example.

If a consumer buys a Toyota Corolla at RM117,000, the tax he pays, up front, to the Government is more than RM50,000.

Then, he enjoys the fuel subsidy each time he fills up with petrol. To benefit from the RM50,000 that he has paid, in advance, it will take approximately 16 years (assuming he uses 60 litres of petrol a week and the subsidy is RM1 per litre)!

So, it is not fair to say that the subsidy of petrol has to be reduced or removed when the commodity price goes up, without reducing or abolishing the hefty taxes on cars.

You can’t use the “cheapest petrol in South-East Asia” and “price of crude oil has skyrocketed” excuses to justify the reduction in petrol subsidy as long as the ridiculously high tax is imposed on cars.

The rakyat won’t buy your story because we know that we, as motorists, have already paid for the petrol “subsidy”. In advance.

Blog EntryMalaysia 12th General Election ResultsMar 8, '08 9:00 PM
for everyone
I woke up at 9am on Sunday (9/3) and looked at my mobile phone, there was an SMS; it reads:

"We've won. bn (Barisan National) did not get 2/3 (majority). The people have spoken! Dawn of a new day for malaysia!" - Mervin Rasiah

I immediately jumped out of bed and switch on my TV and my Internet; found out that the opposition coalition has taken 5 states out of 13!

PENANG, KEDAH, PERAK, KELANTAN & SELANGOR.

I felt light-headed the rest of the day! Finally, CHANGE has taken it's first step in my country; we know not the future, but one thing for certain - things will never be the same again ...

Hi

In light of recent developments in my homeland, and echoing the same call from other Malaysians, please take note of these 2 things.

1) Make sure you're registered as a VOTER and make your vote count!
http://daftarj.spr.gov.my/daftarbi.asp

2) If you think everything that's happening is not related to you and choose to do nothing, please, for your own sake, read this from Martin Niemoller:

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

I was invited by dennis to join him and Stitch for this event. Was there from 8am to 12pm. Tiring, but really had a great time!

for everyone
In a HardTalk programme first broadcast on Thursday 13 September 2007, Sarah Montague talks to Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar.

Malaysia has just marked fifty years of independence, and there's much to celebrate.

Living standards have improved immeasurably over the past five decades, illiteracy has been virtually eradicated and the economy is doing well.

But do Indian and Chinese Malaysians have as much to celebrate as the Malay population?

Sarah Montague talks to Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar about whether the law giving preferential treatment to Malay and other indigenous groups is now outdated.

HARDtalk can be seen on BBC World at 03:30h GMT (not Asia), 08:30h GMT, 14:30h GMT, 20:30h GMT, 23:30h GMT (not Asia)

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 0430 and 2330.

Just a short blog about my first experience of a "photo marathon".
Read more here: http://www.photomarathonasia.com/malaysia/details.html

12 hours
3 themes
0 breaks

Yupe, Dave, Jimmy and myself have survived the gruelling, tiring, stressful, painful etc event!
Special thanx to Jeannie for tagging along! Hope you had as much "fun" as us!

Here are my entries; it's tough to follow the theme, but I do my best...

"Malaysia Leads"

"Lunch Break"

"Abandon Lot"

I enjoyed the experience and photo taking opportunity very much! It's different when you MUST get your photos RIGHT in-camera! No cropping, no curves, etc. Challenging but rewarding as well - satisfaction!
